UL Approves Isobutanol for UL 87A Pumps

Gevo has confirmed that Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has approved the generic use of up to 16 percent isobutanol in UL 87A pumps by any manufacturer meeting ASTM specifications, providing all of the service stations across the country with the assurance that isobutanol blended gasoline will work in their current gasoline pumps without the need to purchase new equipment.

Gevo, the world’s only commercial producer of bio-based isobutanol, has been working with UL for several years to approve the use of isobutanol in UL 87A pumps. UL in working with various companies and independent laboratories compiled data for their scientific determination on isobutanol.

Gevo sponsored a large study based on SAE J1681 and using a model created in a previous UL investigation with ethanol-surrogate gasoline fuel blends.

Glenn Johnston, executive vice president for regulatory affairs at Gevo, says UL approval removes a hurdle in the commercialization of renewable isobutanol in on-road gasoline.

In July, Gevo began supplying the US Coast Guard research and development center with initial quantities of finished 16.1 percent renewable isobutanol-blended gasoline for engine testing.

With crude oil price projected to top $140 per barrel by 2035, alternative fuel technologies, which can produce gasoline at the equivalent of $75 per barrel, will rise, according to a Lux Research report published earlier this year.
