The Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Needham Heights, Mass., has removed about 98 percent of influent biological oxygen demand (BOD) after installing a BioprocessH2O membrane biological reactor (MBR) system, according to a Bioprocess H2O case study.
The bottle company’s old wastewater treatment system wasn’t maintaining a flow rate required for effluent discharge. It had a rapid flux decline and the company had to replace its tubular membranes every six month.
To fix the problem, BioprocessH2O supplied a bioFlow MBR System designed to reduce BOD. It uses a membrane system combined with a free oil coalesce and a textile-based absorbent oil removal system to protect the membrane elements, the case study says. Additionally, the aeration tank has a jet aeration system and a pair of positive displacement (PD) blowers to maximize efficiency.
After installing the new system, the Coke plant requires minimal operator attention, maintains MBS system performance and sustains membrane flux, Bioprocess H2O says.
Earlier this month, Bear Republic Brewing Company installed a Cambrian Innovation EcoVolt system that will eliminate 80 percent to 90 percent of BOD, Cambrian says. The system also converts CO2 directly into biogas that can be used on-site to generate both heat and electricity for Bear Republic’s production process.
