Grocers Support Plastic Bag Ban

plastic bagsThe California Grocers Association, along with other business, labor and environmental groups, has voiced its support for a ban on single-use plastic bags at all supermarkets, convenience stores and liquor stores in California, Supermarket News reports.

A similar proposal fell short by three votes last year in the state senate. The new proposed law addresses concerns about potential job loses at bag-manufacturing facilities.

The bill would also require paper bags to include recycled content, and provide $2 million in loans and grants to companies that retain and retrain workers to manufacture “a new generation of reusable bags with the smallest environmental footprint,” reports the San Jose Mercury News, quoting a summary of the legislation.

Los Angeles, along with about 100 other cities and counties in California, have already banned single-use plastic bags.
