Murray Energy is suing the EPA to stop what it calls the agency’s “illegal promulgation of senseless and destructive regulations, with absolutely no regard for their job and family destruction,” the Intelligencer reports.

Murray spokesman Gary M. Broadbent tells the West Virginia newspaper that the EPA’s rules issued over the last several years have tried to eliminate the domestic coal industry — along with the jobs and low-cost energy it provides. “The Clean Air Act is crystal clear in requiring the EPA to evaluate the negative impact that their regulations will have on jobs, but they have repeatedly been derelict in their duty,” Broadbent says.

The coal industry has also attacked the EPA’s carbon pollution rules for new power plants. National Mining Association president and CEO Hal Quinn in September called them risky and said they will lead to higher utility bills and “significant” job loses. The industry found an ally in the US Chamber of Commerce, which is backing legislation that would diminish the EPA’s proposed power plant rules and block emissions limits for existing power plants.

In a November letter to Congress, the Chamber said the Clean Air Act is “not the appropriate vehicle to regulate greenhouse gas emissions” and warns the EPA’s GHG emissions limits for power plants will raise power prices with “negative implications extending to nearly every segment of the economy.”
