Pesticide-Tainted Foods Sicken 1,000

More than 1,000 people have become ill after eating pesticide-tainted frozen food in Japan, Jiji Press reports.

Earlier this month, Maruha Nichiro Holdings recalled 6.3 million frozen food packages after discovering a pesticide in some products, ranging from pizzas to corn cream croquettes. The company, Japan’s largest seafood firm, said some samples sent back by customers contained malathion, an insecticide used to kill aphids in corn and rice fields.

Detectives are investigating whether the pesticide was deliberately added to the food at a factory in Gunma, north of Tokyo, the Japanese news agency says.

The company says it has recovered 1.49 million packages of the recalled products. None of the potentially contaminated foods were shipped overseas.
