An ASTM subcommittee has proposed ASTM WK44033, Specification for Fluid Composite Transfer Pipe and Fittings, which covers requirements and test methods for a new type of pipe intended for industrial or oil and gas wastewater transfer. Committee member James Goddard says that federal and state agencies will eventually use or reference the standard, and it will become part of purchasing requirements for oil, gas and mining companies.
Sompo Japan Insurance and Nipponkoa Insurance have integrated their ISO 14001-certified environmental management systems and obtained blanket certification for all 400 of their offices in Japan. The companies say they have constructed the largest environmental management system of any financial institution in Japan.
The renovated Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt federal office building in Portland, Ore., has been certified LEED Platinum. The building uses radiant cooling and heating, photovoltaics and rainwater collection, and is expected to cut energy use 55 percent – saving $300,000 to $400,000 in yearly operating costs – compared to the old building, Sustainable Business Oregon reports.
The University of Oregon‘s $51 million, 103,000 sq ft Robert and Beverly Lewis Integrative Science Building has earned LEED Platinum. The facility uses waste heat from a utility tunnel below the building to control internal temperatures, and reclaims water from a nearby fish research facility for use in toilets and urinals, Sustainable Business Oregon reports.
