Top EPA Management Challenges: Site Reuse, Chemical Risks, Delegation to States

EPA buildingThe EPA’s top management challenges in 2013 were oversight of delegation to states, safe reuse of contaminated sites, enhancing IT security to combat cyber threats, lack of information and authority for managing chemical risks, and workforce planning, according to the agency’s inspector general.

The OIG’s annual plan for FY14 says these priorities will help guide audits and investigations into the agency this year.

Many of the year’s audits are already underway, while others will begin in the next few months. They cover EPA oversight issues including:

  • Hurricane Sandy recovery funding
  • Diesel Emission Recovery Act grants
  • Siting of renewables on potentially contaminated land
  • Enforcement agreement compliance for Clean Air Act violators, and
  • Management of drinking water risks related to fracking.

Takeaway: The EPA Office of Inspector General’s 2014 Annual Plan outlines the agency’s management challenges, and the auditor’s priorities for FY14.
