Standards & Certification Briefing: Kia Motors, KIOSK Information Systems, SMUD

Kia Motors Corporation has announced that the company’s new Soul EV, which will have its world premiere at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show starting later this week, has achieved UL Environment validation for bio-based organic carbon content for 10 percent of its interior materials. Various bio-based materials have been applied to the Soul EV, such as bio degradable plastic, bio-foam and bio-fabric.

KIOSK Information Systems has achieved ISO 14001 certification for its manufacturing processes. Auditors authenticated KIOSK recycling processes for all waste stream elements including steel, electronics, cardboard, and employee trash. Auditors also confirmed OSHA standard compliance tied to responsible disposal of all chemicals involved in manufacturing processes.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s East Campus Operations Center has received a LEED Platinum rating, with net zero energy as the ultimate target. Highlights of the building include Weather Wise weather-predicting technology to control the operations of the central utility plant, the administration building is a six-story cast-in-place concrete structure with a radiant heating and cooling system that provides comfortable temperatures, and a geoexchange field stores energy in the ground using water.

Compass Datacenters has been awarded LEED Gold certification for its data center in Franklin, Tenn. The 21,000-square-foot facility holds servers and other equipment in a reinforced concrete warehouse built solely to protect the computers that allow companies to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Spartanburg Methodist College’s Edgar H. Ellis Hall has received LEED certification. Constructed in 2012, the 48,000-square-foot building houses nine academic classrooms, academic offices, Office of Academic Affairs, the writing center, student publications, Sub Connection café and the Gibbs Auditorium on the South Carolina campus.

First Potomac Realty Trust’s 440 First Street, NW, Washington, DC, was awarded LEED Platinum certification. The 140,000 sq.ft., Class A redeveloped building boasts a glass curtain wall design that allows natural light into the space and provides views of the Capitol and the Washington Monument. 440 First Street also features two rooftop terraces, a conference center/boardroom, a state-of-the-art fitness center and underground parking, as well as ground floor retail and restaurant space.

Curtis Instruments (UK) Ltd, a subsidiary of Curtis Instruments Inc., has been awarded ISO 14001 for its implementation of an environmental management system at its operations center. The center provides sales, manufacturing, logistics, technical development, support and after-sales service.
