Standards & Compliance Briefing: IHG’s LEED, Cargill’s RSPO, Siemens’ LEED

InterContinental Hotels Group‘s online sustainability program, IHG Green Engage, is now recognized by the US Green Building Council under its LEED Volume program, as well as by Green Key Global, as providing streamlined pathways to certification. IHG says it is the first hotel company to provide an approach to pre-certification for new-build hotels under the LEED 2009 for New Construction rating system. IHG also provides LEED pre-certification for existing hotels.

Cargill’s PT Harapan Sawit Lestari oil palm plantation in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, has received Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil certification, covering all the site’s operations – the Manis Mata and Paku Juang mills, and the Inti (company-owned) and KKPA (cooperative credit scheme) estates. This is Cargill’s second RSPO certification, and its other plantation in West Kalimantan is in the process of being RSPO certified.

An ASTM subcommittee is developing ASTM WK43549, Practice for Installation, Commissioning, Operations and Maintenance Process, which details minimum requirements to ensure photovoltaic power plants deliver safe and reliable power generation. The standard will provide guidance for potential stakeholders involved in financing, construction, and maintenance of solar PV electric power plants, ASTM says.

The OEKO-TEX association, which runs testing under the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for sustainable textiles, says that five chemicals added to the European Chemicals Agency’s candidate list of substances of very high concern (SVHCs) in December are relevant for the textile industry. All five are already covered by the existing criteria catalogue used for product certification under the OEKO-TEX Standard 100. The substances are C.I. Direct Black 38, C.I. Direct Red 28, dihexyl phthalate, cadmium sulphide and lead diacetate.

Siemens has opened its LEED Platinum headquarters in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, Clean Technica reports. The company says the building cost no more than an average Siemens office building of the same size, while using about half the energy.

Innovia Films’ Wigton, UK site has has obtained Forest Stewardship Council and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Chain of Custody certifications.

Wilfrid Laurier University‘s campus in Brantford, Ontario has earned LEED Silver certification for its Research and Academic Center East building, which includes no-irrigation vegetation, recycled materials, a solar reflecting roof, reduced hard surfaces and elimination of refrigerant coolant HCFCs, Exchange Magazine reports. The RAC West building earned LEED Silver in March 2013.
