VW Joins Clean Shipping Network

VWThe Volkswagen Group has joined the Clean Shipping Network, an association of cargo owners, and will use the Clean Shipping Index (CSI) assessment tool to analyze and reduce the environmental impact of marine shipment.

It’s the first German automaker to join the network and says the move is part of its strategy to anchor environmental sustainability in more business activities along the process chain.

The data in the CSI make the environmental efficiency of marine shipment more comparable. The index allows the members of the Clean Shipping Network to determine the emissions of individual ships and individual routes and therefore to take valid environmental criteria into consideration in the selection of vessels. Apart from chemicals and waste disposal, the index also includes carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions.

Last month EcoVadis and BSR’s Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) teamed up to standardize environmental reporting requests for the sea freight supply chain.

Under the partnership, sustainable supply chain firm EcoVadis will align its environmental assessment questionnaires for sea carriers with the Clean Cargo Environmental Performance Survey framework. Clean Cargo members can also use the EcoVadis online collaboration platform to access reliable sustainability scorecards on their partners’ performance.
