Walmart is ahead of its self-imposed pace to convert to renewable energy and cut energy use, by slashing energy consumption by 7.4 percent in the third quarter of 2013, more than double the 3 percent needed to be on track. That translates to annual savings of $250 million.
The company reported this as it held its annual Global Sustainability Milestone Meeting on Feb. 17.
The company set its energy efficiency goal to cut consumption by 20 percent by 2020.
LED lighting has reduced costs as well. A year ago only 20 percent of the store planners had created prototypes to be 100 percent LED. Now, that’s up to 80 percent. That means Walmart will build 2,000 stores using the 100 percent LED lighting.
The retailer set a 2020 target to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy and create zero waste.
Three of its largest markets have already achieved 80% no-waste — Walmart US, Seiyu in Japan and Asda in the UK.
