Wendy’s says it now requires its suppliers to submit quarterly progress reports on the percentage of gestation-crate-free pork supplied to its fast-food locations.
In 2012, Wendy’s committed to eliminate the restrictive cages used to confine pregnant pigs from its American and Canadian supply chains.
On its website, Wendy’s says last year it met with pork industry representatives and outside experts to work toward its goal of sourcing only from gestation stall-free pork suppliers. The quarterly progress reports are part of this commitment.
Wendy’s also says “as a result of recent announcements by two suppliers who currently make up the majority of our raw materials (pork) business,” it’s confident it will meet this goal by the end of 2022. The restaurant doesn’t name the two pork suppliers.
Last month, Tyson Foods said it has asked its farmers to improve breeding pigs’ housing methods. Pork providers Smithfield Foods and Hormel have pledged to end the use of gestation crates at their company-owned facilities by 2017.
