Bag Fee Proposed in New York City

plasticbag8410A 10-cent-per-bag fee has been proposed in the New York City Council.

The fee would apply to markets, street vendors and retail stores. Restaurants, pharmacies and liquor stores would be exempt. Supporters say the fee would cut down on bags going to landfills and save the city $10 million a year.

The American Progressive Bag Alliance, representing plastic bag manufacturers and recyclers said the fee is in reality a tax. “This proposed ordinance will drive up the cost of already expensive groceries for New Yorkers while failing to achieve any environmental goals,” it said.
