iPhones Recycling Reaches Canada

Apple iPhoneApple said its iPhone reuse and recycling program is now available in Canada. Customers can now trade in old iPhones at an Apple store for a credit of up to $275.

Apple bills the program as “an affordable way to upgrade to a new iPhone.” The company had launched a similar program in the US last summer. The program had been expanded to include the UK and France.

Customers can bring their old phone to an Apple store, where staff members will determine on the spot the amount of the credit. That will depend on the model and condition of the phone.

Previously, Apple allowed Canadians to mail their old Apple devices to the company for recycling, without providing a credit.

Apple says the old phones are handled by Brightstar, a mobile phone distributor that determines whether the device should be refurbished, resold or recycled. E-waste recycling has become a multi-billion dollar industry and is projected to grow substantially.
