Paris Lifts Driving Limits after Just One Day

Paris smogFrench authorities lifted the restrictions they placed on Paris drivers on Monday, saying after just one day that they had achieved the desired environmental outcome.

“Bravo, and thank you,” French ecology minister Philippe Martin said in a message to Parisians, the Guardian reports.

Martin said that 90 percent of Parisians had complied with the restrictions, and the government decided to stop the program because the weather was improving and pollution levels were predicted to stay at a safe level on Tuesday.

But experts said it would take time to determine the true impact of the restrictions, The Guardian said.

The system allowed drivers to use their cars only on alternative days, depending on their license plate numbers. Electric and hybrid vehicles were exempt, as were cars with three or more passengers. Paris also introduced free public transportation, including cycle- and electric car-sharing.

By Monday afternoon, police had issued 3,859 drivers with €22 ($31) fines for breaching the ban.
