Standards & Compliance Briefing: Chrysler’s ISO 50001, GM’s LEED, Prop. 65

Chrysler Group’s Brampton Assembly Plant has achieved the ISO 50001 energy management standard with certification by TÜV, Plant reports. Investments in automated heating and ventilation management are projected to save about $2 million a year in electricity and natural gas costs, and lighting control projects are projected to save $110,000 a year. The plant also has ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management certification, and Chrysler aims to expand ISO 50001 to its remaining North American plants by the end of 2014.  

General Motors’ engine plant in Joinville, Brazil has earned LEED Gold certification, joining five other GM LEED-certified facilities in China and the US. The plant features a 350 kW solar array, uses reverse osmosis to filter wastewater for toilet flushing and cooling towers, and uses filtering gardens to treat sewage. It is working to achieve landfill-free status.

Starbucks opened a LEED-certified store at Disneyland Resort in California. The shop uses all reclaimed wood and is surrounded by a green wall with more than 1,000 plants, Travelers Today reports.

Newark Recycled Paperboard Solutions, of Cranford, N.J., has achieved Sustainable Forestry Initiative chain-of-custody certification at its mills in Fitchburg, Mass., and Milwaukee, Recycling Today reports.

Baby furniture retailer BabyAge.com has filed suit in federal court in Scranton, Pa., seeking a court order ruling that the non-profit Center for Environmental Health has no standing to sue BabyAge under California’s Proposition 65. CEH has filed or threatened to file suits against BabyAge since 2007, over the company’s use of chlorinated tris, or TDCPP, Furniture Today reports.

The ThermoGreen Filter System, which recovers waste heat from stoves as an energy source to heat water, has earned endorsement from the Green Restaurant Association. The product can earn a restaurant nine GreenPoints towards becoming a Certified Green Restaurant.

The Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nev., home of the Las Vegas Wranglers hockey team, has been awarded LEED Gold certification for existing buildings. Boyd Gaming Corp. operates the arena as part of The Orleans casino, which has cut the amount of waste it sends to local landfills by 25 percent, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

The IEC has published IEC 61851-23 ed1.0, Electric Vehicle Conductive Charging System – Part 23: DC electric vehicle charging station.

ASTM has released ASTM D975-14, Standard Specification for Diesel Fuel Oils, which covers seven grades of diesel fuel oils. These grades are: Grade No. 1-D S15; Grade No. 1-D S500; Grade No. 1-D S5000; Grade No. 2-D S15; Grade No. 2-D S500; Grade No. 2-D S5000; and Grade No. 4-D.
