APP to Restore 1M Hectares of Forest

Asia Pulp and Paper Group (APP) today announced a plan to restore and support the conservation of 1 million hectares of rainforest across Indonesia.

The commitment, developed with WWF, Greenpeace and NGO members of APP’s Solutions Working Group, takes the company beyond its legal conservation requirements and is approximately equivalent to the total area of plantation from which the company sourced pulp fiber in 2013.

This announcement comes just over a year after APP said it would stop clearing natural forests across its supply chains in Indonesia, accelerating a pledge to use only trees from plantations by 2015. APP’s pledge followed a campaign by Greenpeace, which has pressured the pulp and paper producer — as well as the companies that used its products — to end the practice of clearing natural forests.

APP says it is currently in consultation with WWF and other stakeholders to develop plans for identified priority landscapes in which APP and its suppliers have commercial forestry-based operations, which will then be implemented by the company in close collaboration with other relevant players in the landscape, while observing the principles of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).
