SC Johnson Reaches Zero Landfill Status at Brazil Facility

sc johnson pursuing zero landfillSC Johnson has achieved zero landfill status at its eighth global manufacturing facility, the company announced.

The Manaus, Brazil, site has implemented several initiatives that increased recycling rates and reduced packaging in the last few years.

SC Johnson’s other zero landfill facilities include two in China and one each in Pakistan, the Netherlands, the US, Poland and Canada. Through 2012, 10 of SC Johnson’s global manufacturing facilities achieved waste diversion rates of at least 90 percent, the company says. P&G has a goal of reducing its global manufacturing waste by 70 percent by 2016.

The announcement coincides with the Obama administration’s release of its methane reduction strategy that targets releases from landfills, coal mines, agriculture, and oil and gas production. The strategy includes a plan for the EPA to propose updated standards to reduce methane from new landfills in the summer of 2014.

Last month, SC Johnson announced a PR push – the 30 Green Days Challenge – to encourage families to take simple steps towards helping the environment. Four families from the US, Canada and the UK agreed to make one “green-minded” change each day, for one month. The mothers are bloggers and authors who will share their experiences on their websites, and on the company’s Green Choices site.
