Standards & Compliance Briefing: ASHRAE and Green Building, R2, Global Recycled Standard

ASHRAE is for the first time partnering on the development of the National Green Building Standard, ICC/ASHRAE 700. Other organizations developing the standard’s third edition include the National Association of Home Builders and and the International Code Council.

The Canadian government has proposed legislative changes to the Hazardous Products Act as a step towards the country’s implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.

The second stakeholder review for the Global Recycled Standard v3 is underway, with comments due before April 28 to [email protected]. An international working group of certification bodies, including Control Union, ICEA, IMO, Intertek, and SCS Global Services, led revision of the standard, intended for companies that wish to make a content claim on the amount of recycled material in the final product. The final GRS v3 is tentatively scheduled for release May 15.

The American Iron and Steel Institute has been reaccredited by the American National Standards Institute under its recently revised operating procedures for documenting consensus on AISI-sponsored American National Standards. The revised procedures replace the previous version that was approved in April 2013.

InterConnection.org said it is the first US nonprofit to be certified as an R2:2013 electronics recycler. The new R2 Standard includes heightened requirements for electronics recyclers such as tighter export regulations, detailed downstream material tracking, and a stricter focus on data security and destruction. InterConnection is ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified, and has over 750 commercial IT disposition customers, including PACCAR, Alaska Airlines and MultiCare Health.

ADP announced that two of its data centers, in Georgia and South Dakota, have earned Energy Star certification. The $11 billion-sales company provides business outsourcing and human resources support.

Alargan International Real Estate Company’s headquarters in Kuwait has achieved LEED Platinum for commercial interiors, the first such certification for any project in the country, Construction Week Online reports. The building uses high-performance glazing and low-emitting adhesives, paints, coatings, carpets and furniture.

Oslo Airport in Norway has been certified to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard by DNV GL. The airport converts stored winter snow into cooling energy in the summer, recovers energy from wastewater and has undertaken a pilot to study hydrogen as an energy source for vehicles.

ASTM has published ASTM D2163-14e1, Standard Test Method for Determination of Hydrocarbons in Liquefied Petroleum (LP) Gases and Propane/Propene Mixtures by Gas Chromatography.

ASTM has published ASTM D6414-14, Standard Test Methods for Total Mercury in Coal and Coal Combustion Residues by Acid Extraction or Wet Oxidation/Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption.
