Fish Consumption Prompts Stricter Water Quality Rule

Boeing and other Washington state-based companies say proposals to limit toxic pollutants in Washington waters may drive business out of the state.

At issue is the state’s efforts to boost the current fish consumption rate, which will drive higher water quality standards, the Associated Press reports.

The regional head of the EPA has said the federal agency plans to take over the process if state officials don’t finalize a rule this year.

Boeing has warned that the proposals “will have unintended consequences for continued Boeing production in the state,” the AP reports. And while the Association of Washington Business and local governments say keeping the cancer risk factor at its current rate is “unacceptable,” they also say some of the proposals will kill business because technology doesn’t exist to limit certain pollutants.
