Green Fleet Roundup: BMW, Ryder System, Kroger

The port uses high-grade glass-on-glass solar modules for the generation of electricity and is made principally out of bamboo.

Agility Fuel Systems has launched a behind-the-cab compressed natural gas fuel system for heavy -duty trucks and buses at the Alternative Clean Transportation Expo in Long Beach, Calif. Depending on the application, this system will be able to deliver a range of approximately 600 miles before refueling. Agility also announced the formation of Agility Hexagon, a joint venture with compressed natural gas storage cylinder maker Hexagon Lincoln that will build cylinders for use in Agility’s systems. The parties have also committed to build a dedicated cylinder production facility that will be on the same site as a new fuel system assembly operation to be built by Agility.

Transportation and supply chain company Ryder System has entered into a long-term agreement with Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide for the purchase and supply of complete compressed natural gas fuel systems. Ryder will be the first transportation company to use Quantum’s CNG systems on a national scale. In addition to the purchasing agreement, Quantum and Ryder will work together to improve future fuel system design.

The state of Oklahoma, its agencies and the city of Dallas have ordered a total of 321 Ford F-150 pickups that can run on compressed natural gas. Oklahoma is part of a coalition of 22 states seeking to use more CNG vehicles in their fleets. The states of Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, according to Ford.

Grocery chain Kroger has said it will be the first in Oregon to deploy a fleet of heavy-duty trucks that run on liquid natural gas. The 40 trucks will replace 40 diesel trucks currently in use, and are expected to start making store deliveries in the Portland metropolitan area by the end of the year.

Toyota Motor Sales and its affiliate Toyota Motor Credit Corporation have entered into a group of financial agreements with FirstElement Fuel to support the long-term operation and maintenance expenses of new hydrogen refueling stations in California. FirstElement will work to develop a network of fueling stations across California in target market locations approved by Toyota, and consistent with the California Fuel Cell Partnership Road Map.

A bus built by Proterra has set a record for the most miles traveled by a battery-electric bus in a day – traveling more than 700 miles in 24 hours.  The bus recorded an average fuel economy of nearly 27 miles per gallon – nearly six times that of a diesel bus and seven times that of CNG bus, according to Proterra.
