Low VOC Resins Help Automakers Cut Emissions

Volatile organic compound (VOC) emission standards for vehicle interiors are driving automakers to use low VOC resins, Plastics Today reports.

Resin suppliers such as Tokyo’s Asahi Kasei Plastics offers polyacetal (POM) resin grades with VOC emissions of 2, 5 and 10 ppm, depending on the requirements of the automaker. Japanese automakers have some of the strictest VOC emission standards, the publication reports.

Additionally, Dallas, Texas-based Celanese, offers XAP low-emission technology for its Hostaform acetal copolymer (POM) to help carmakers meet global emission standards for vehicle interiors.

Meanwhile, cryogenic condensation can be a safe and cost effective way for oil and gas operators to reduce VOC emissions of to meet new EPA regulations, according to a white paper by Linde Group. The updated regulations require operators to control VOC emissions by 95 percent if the storage tanks used in oil or natural gas production and transmission have the potential to emit 6 or more tons of VOCs a year.
