“Scaling back” proposed chemical reform laws may be in order, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) said on Tuesday in an effort to achieve a deal between Republicans and Democrats on modernizing the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

Waxman suggested both sides “return to the drawing board,” The Hill reports, as lawmakers have been unable to agree on how to reform the outdated TSCA from 1976.

The West Virginia chemical spill that contaminated drinking water earlier this year added momentum to calls for TSCA reform with chemical companies calling for changes — but it has yet to result in any updated legislation.

Democrats say Rep. John Shimkus’ (R-Ill.) second draft bill on the issue, released last week, is too industry friendly and would result in weaker chemical laws, The Hill reports.
