Xeros System Cuts Water Use ‘Up to 80%’

A California athletic club has reduced water usage for laundry washed with a machine using Xeros laundry system by nearly 50 percent.

The Capital Athletic Club’s installation of the Xeros Laundry System, which uses polymer beads rather than water, has enabled it to cut its water consumption while improving laundry cleaning quality and reducing costs, according to the Sacramento club.

California is facing the worst drought in the state’s history and some cities are asking businesses to cut water use by 35 percent.

The Xeros Laundry System uses up to 80 percent less water, up to 50 percent less energy and about 50 percent less detergent compared to traditional “soap and water” methods. By combining the beads’ molecular structure with a proprietary detergent solution, dirt from soiled items is attracted and absorbed by the beads — Xeros says this produces cleaner results.

The reusable beads have a lifespan of hundreds of washes before being collected and recycled for reintroduction into the polymer supply chain.

Xeros North America president Jonathan Benjamin says the company’s clients have experienced a reduction of up to nearly 80 percent in water usage with the laundry system.
