Field to MarketField to Market today launched an agricultural supply chain program for US commodity crops.

The sustainable agriculture alliance, whose members include Cargill, General Mills, Kellogg, Monsanto, Coca-Cola Company, World Wildlife Fund and Walmart, says the Field to Market metrics and benchmarks will measure sustainability improvement in corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, rice, potatoes and other crops related to seven sustainability indicators: land use, soil conservation, soil carbon, irrigated water use, water quality, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the new program will focus on promoting continuous improvement at the field and landscape level and enabling supply chain sourcing claims, Field to Market says.

In 2009, it launched its Fieldprint Calculator, a free online tool that helps growers analyze how their farming practices impact natural resources. The group’s July 2012 report found corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, rice and potatoes are being produced more sustainably in the US than they were 30 years ago.
