How to Save Money by Building Green

green buildingGreen building is cost effective, and any upfront additional costs for building green are recouped in one to two years on average — with exponential cost savings thereafter, according to an article in HPAC Engineering.

Despite misconceptions about green buildings costing more than conventional building, available research debunks this myth, the trade publication says.

The article cites a green-building cost analysis commissioned by California that found “minimal increases in upfront costs of about 2 percent to support green design would, on average, result in life-cycle savings of 20 percent of total construction costs — more than 10 times the initial investment. For example, an initial upfront investment of up to $100,000 to incorporate green-building features into a $5 million project would result in a savings of $1 million in today’s dollars over the life of the building.”

Earlier this week the US Green Building Council South Florida Chapter partnered with Office Depot and Windfall, a group purchasing organization, to help the green building community save money by creating a first-of-its-kind group savings program for members of the USGBC South Florida chapter.
