The Daily Camera says a report from Kessler Consulting and LBA Associates also advises the city to require all homeowners to subscribe to a waste management service.
Boulder is updating its Zero Waste Strategic Plan and has set a goal to reuse, recycle or compost at least 85 percent of its waste, rather than sending it to the landfill. As of 2013, Boulder businesses divert 28 percent of their waste, the city says.
In similar efforts to reduce waste, Massachusetts restaurant now send food waste to be converted into energy via anaerobic digesters. The move is expected to help the state reach its goal of reducing the waste stream by 30 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.
As of November, New York City restaurants had diverted more than 2,500 tons of food waste from landfills in six months.
