Drip irrigation manufacturer Netafim USA has extended the deadline for its Recycling Grower Compensation Program to Dec. 31 and increased the compensation rate for its product credit voucher from $0.07 per pound to $0.08 per pound.
The recycling program, offering free pick up and compensation in exchange for used irrigation tubing from qualifying California growers, has diverted more than 30 million pounds of irrigation tubing from landfills since 2007, the company says.
Located in Fowler, Calif., the Netafim Recycling Facility collects and recycles used polyethylene irrigation tubing/hose and tape from agricultural applications at no cost to the grower. The company says it’s the only manufacturer that also pays growers for their used tubing; once the material is collected, growers are provided with either a cash payment ($0.04 per pound), or a product credit voucher ($0.08/pound) that can be applied towards the future purchase of any Netafim drip irrigation products.
Drip irrigation increases efficiency and reduces growers’ operating costs through decreased labor, energy and water use, says Todd Rinkenberger, Western regional sales manager for Netafim USA. He says the company’s program has helped reduce waste from landfills by up to 5,000,000 pounds per year, and helps farmers comply with governmental regulations regarding tubing disposal.
Netafim USA monitors the entire recycling process – from testing and evaluating used tubing in the field to washing, grinding and re-pelletizing. The material is used to produce a recycled resin that is then used in mining and landscape dripline products, where recycled materials are a critical requirement for a number of sustainable building initiatives. The recycled resin also gets used in industrial products such as plastic pallets.
