GE ‘Data Lake’ Increases Fuel, Energy Efficiency

GEGeneral Electric has created an industrial-scale data lake software system that could help industry manage big data, and in the case of airlines, help increase fuel efficiency.

In a 2013 pilot, GE Aviation collected information on 15,000 flights from 25 different airlines at about 14 gigabytes of metrics per flight. GE was then able to integrate terabytes of full flight data to produce 10-times cost savings and significantly reduce analysis time from months to days.

For aviation customers like AirAsia, this could mean savings of more than 1 percent of their fuel bill each year.

The software is the result of a partnership between GE and Pivotal, a platform-as-service provider, to create a new data architecture that will cater to the needs of industrial data and their infrastructure operations.

The industrial data lake system integrates GE’s Predix industrial software platform with Pivotal’s software. The system then enables real-time big data collection generated by systems such as aircraft, and runs insightful analytics on the data.

The system offers a 2,000-times performance improvement on time to analysis, allowing companies to focus resources on turning the data into workable information for increased productivity.

GE expects the data collection to grow to 10 million flights and 1,500 terabytes of full flight operational data by 2015.

In recent years, companies such as UPS, Inttra and Ford have been using big data to enhance their sustainability and efficiency efforts.

Railroads, hospitals and utilities are other industries that GE expects will benefit from their system.
