KW PlasticsKW Plastics has received its second non-objection letter from the US Food and Drug Administration’s Center of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition for KWR621 FDA, a food-grade post-consumer resin approved for levels up to 100 percent content.

The letter expands FDA’s non-objections to produce a post-consumer resin suitable for use in the fabrication of disposable food service items, according to the company, a recycler of polypropylene used automotive battery casings.

In addition to the reusable food contact crates and pallets, appropriate applications for the plastic material now include disposable cutlery, soup containers, and hot and cold drink cups, such as stadium cups.

Earlier this year, Sierra Resins begun work to develop biodegradable plastic from fisheries waste streams that can be applied to products that are used in the food services and food processing industry.
