LEED Buildings May Be Exempt from Property Taxes

USGBCLEED-certified buildings in New York’s Niagara County may soon be exempt from paying property taxes.

The Niagara County Legislature will vote next week on holding a public hearing in September to discuss the green building tax break, which would apply to both residential and commercial LEED buildings, reports the Buffalo News.

The proposal was passed by the Legislature’s Administration Committee Tuesday night.

The newspaper reports that if it becomes law, the exemption would apply only to buildings constructed or rehabilitated after the law is passed. Existing buildings would not be eligible.

In an effort to advance green building across the globe, the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), the third-party certification body for the LEED rating system, and Bureau Veritas, a global testing, inspection and certification body, have formed a strategic business partnership. As part of the agreement, Bureau Veritas will facilitate LEED certification on behalf of GBCI for LEED green building projects.
