Spotlight on Award Winners: Caesars Entertainment Energy Management Program

project of the year badgeSpotlight on Award Winners is a series of articles featuring winners from the 2014 Environmental Leader Product & Project Awards. Look for the 2015 Awards call for submissions in early September.

Caesars Entertainment won a Top Project of the Year Award for its energy management program that was revamped beginning in 2010. The company set goals to reduce energy use by 20% on a per-square-foot basis by 2015 against a 2007 baseline, as well as to reduce carbon emissions, as a cornerstone of its CodeGreen environmental program.

In 2013, Caesars exceeded its absolute GHG emissions reduction goal of 10% one year ahead of schedule. The reduction, verified independently by a third party, resulted in over 143,500 metric tons of avoided emissions per year. Specific projects included installation of 12,000+ digital thermostats with integrated occupancy sensors in guestrooms, deployment of 100,000+ high-efficiency LED bulbs, installation of occupancy control sensors for lighting and installation of 10,000+ low-flow showerheads and aerators. Operational changes in guestrooms, convention spaces and food and beverage outlets reduced energy usage. The project yielded annual electric savings of over 145,000,000 kilowatt-hours in 2012 relative to a 2007 base year.

Caesars Entertainment has just announced a new CodeGreen program initiative: visitors now have the opportunity to plug in their electric vehicles thanks to EV charging stations at 13 Caesars’ resorts and casinos. In partnership with NV Energy, nearly all of Caesars’ Northern and Southern Nevada resorts and casinos now have operational EV charging stations on site, in addition to Harrah’s Resort Southern California. A total of 48 charging ports have been installed in guest parking lots as well as valet areas, and are available for guests to use at no cost, the company says.

The charging stations are on the ChargePoint network, allowing drivers to check station availability and find charging spots through the ChargePoint mobile app, the web and car navigation units.
