Dell won a Top Project of the Year Award for its creation of a plan that lays out a long-term strategy and goals for corporate social responsibility. By 2020, the company expects to reduce the energy intensity of its entire product portfolio by 80%, use only sustainably sourced packaging that is 100% recyclable or compostable, and recover another billion pounds of e-waste.
Specifically, the company created a plan with 20 goals, along with one overarching aim: that by 2020, the good that will come from the technology it makes will be ten times what it takes to create and use it.
One judge said, “If all electronics manufacturers took Dell’s stance of seeking the most environmentally appropriate materials available and preserving reparability, the electronics industry could take a huge leap forward.”
Earlier this summer, Dell announced that its Connected Workplace program is helping it move toward its 2020 goals. The flexible work program helped the company avoid 6,700 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions last year. The program — which includes opportunities such as job sharing, variable work hours and working from home full-time, part-time or just occasionally as the need arises — also saved the company an additional $12 million in 2013.
About 20,000 team members or about 20% of Dell’s workforce participate officially in the Connected Workplace program, bringing Dell almost half way to its goal of 50% global participation by 2020.
