Green Fleet Roundup: Tesla, Greenlots, Kia, ABB, GE, VNG, LNG America

GL Kia SOL-EVTesla Motors has selected Nevada as the official site for the Tesla Gigafactory. The factory will be powered by renewable energy and is expected to produce enough batteries to power 500,000 vehicles annually by 2020.

Greenlots is partnering with Kia Motors America and ABB to offer its SKY Smart Charging platform for the soon-to-launch 2015 Kia Soul EV (pictured). The system will be available at select Kia dealerships in California beginning the third quarter of 2014, and it will allow Soul EV owners to charge their vehicles from empty to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes.

GE Capital Fleet Services has entered into an agreement with VNG to support expansion of the compressed natural gas refueling infrastructure for light-duty fleet vehicles. VNG offers fast-fill CNG fueling within existing retail gasoline stations, eliminating the need for fleets to own and maintain their own refueling stations.

LNG America has selected Taylor-Wharton to begin the front-end engineering and design work for the cryogenic topside of its 3,000 cubic meter Gemini Class LNG bunker barge. The barge is scheduled for delivery at the end of 2015.

Proterra has announced the sale of two 40-foot battery-electric transit vehicles and a fast charge system to King County Metro in Seattle, Wash. Following a one-year trial period, the agency has the pre-arranged option to purchase up to 200 more buses and additional fast charge systems.

Eaton has introduced Procision, a new line of medium-duty dual clutch transmissions that delivers 8 to 10 percent better fuel economy than a similarly equipped vehicle with a torque converter automatic. The transmission is scheduled to be available in the North American market mid-year in 2015.
