No ‘Silver Bullet’ to Cut Buildings’ Carbon Emissions

US commercial buildings can reduce carbon emissions through a range of everyday measures — not a “silver bullet,” CBRE tells Reuters.

CBRE is the world’s largest commercial real estate services company.

Residential and commercial buildings account for about 38 percent of US CO2, according to Department of Energy figures.

David Pogue, CBRE’s global director of corporate responsibility, says buildings, along with their owners and occupants, vary. “We are looking for this silver bullet — this one thing we could just do — but we can’t,” Pogue says. “What we can do is to go back and evaluate where you are, benchmark the building, get it back to original design specifications and work with the tenant base.”

Chicago’s biggest buildings have eliminated more than 28,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions and saved $2.5 million in annual avoided energy costs through retrofits, according to a Natural Resources Defense Council report published in July. The Retrofit Chicago Commercial Business Initiative offers a replicable model for other municipalities, the report says.
