Amazon Commits to 100% Renewable Energy

Amazon Web ServicesAmazon Web Services says it will source 100 percent renewable energy for its global infrastructure. The company doesn’t give a timeframe for achieving this goal.

Amazon has come under fire from Greenpeace for powering its infrastructure with polluting energy sources, unlike its high-tech rivals Google, Rackspace, Apple and Facebook that have all committed to 100 percent renewable power.

Last month, after AWS announced its new data center in Frankfurt, Germany would be carbon neutral, Greenpeace called on Amazon to release more information to verify its carbon-neutral claim.

The nonprofit praised AWS’ new renewables pledge, which was made via an update to its website this week, but said Amazon customers need more information “to be sure AWS means business about renewable energy.” Greenpeace senior IT campaigner Gary Cook said AWS should offer a plan for how it will implement its new commitment across its global footprint.

  1. Economics of self sufficiency has turned in favor of efficiency. Jawboning people and corporations to be good stewards of their resources is pure grandstanding by drum major wannabes. Jawboning is needed only to solicit more contributions to do more jawboning.
