Green Fleet Roundup: GKN Land Systems, Odyne Systems, Honda, VW

GKNGKN Land Systems is increasing production of its Gyrodrive electric flywheel hybrid for buses (pictured) following successful trials in London. The Gyrodrive system offers real-world fuel savings of up to 25 percent, and is smaller than conventional battery or super-capacitor hybrid units.

Odyne Systems has delivered six new trucks featuring Odyne plug-in hybrid systems to Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest utility. The Odyne system powers equipment on the trucks without use of the engine, in most cases, which saves fuel, reduces emissions and reduces work site noise levels.

Honda launched its 2015 Civic Hybrid nationwide Nov. 5 with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price starting at $24,735, and the 2015 Civic Natural Gas goes on sale Nov. 19 with an MSRP starting at $26,740. The Civic Hybrid has an EPA rating of 44/47/45 city/highway/combined and the Civic Natural Gas has an EPA rating of 27/38/31.

Green Car Reports named the 2015 Volkswagen Golf range as its “Best Car to Buy 2015.”  The Golf lineup consists of the TDI Clean Diesel and TSI models as well as the all-electric e-Golf.

The Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering yard in South Korea has ordered a total of 54 Wärtsilä dual fuel engines to power 172,600 cubic meter icebreaking liquid natural gas carriers being built for use in arctic conditions. The Wärtsilä machinery is capable of operating on LNG, heavy fuel oil, or low-viscosity marine diesel oil.

US Oil has opened a compressed natural gas station at the Middleton Farmers Cooperative facility in Middleton, Wisconsin. The new GAIN station will supply UW Provision’s fleet which delivers meat and specialized food products across the Midwest. The station will also provide other carriers and the general public with access to CNG.

Ryder System has signed a full-service lease agreement for 25 compressed natural gas tractors with Northeast Foods, based in Baltimore, Maryland. This will be Ryder’s first natural gas lease customer in Maryland, and it will provide maintenance for the vehicles from its Baltimore service facility, which is being upgraded for compliance with natural gas standards.
