MHG, BASF Discuss Strategies for Making More Sustainable Products

MHG logoMHG, the manufacturer of one hundred percent biodegradable plastic, met behind closed doors with BASF, the largest chemical company in the world, to discuss strategies that would help BASF meet the global demands of society, while also conserving resources, MHG says.

“The meeting with BASF was very productive,” stated Dr. Paul Pereira, CEO and Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of MHG. “Sustainability is crucial for the future and BASF is looking to develop more sustainable solutions to meet the demands of society. The biopolymers we produce can provide them with materials that will help them achieve their goals of developing more sustainable products that meet economic, environmental and social needs.”

MHG is currently in the process of ramping up its facility to produce its completely biodegradable plastic. The process is expected to be completed by mid 2015, in time for the next canola harvest. The completion of the facility will coincide with the first shipments to customers who currently have contracts with MHG.

BASF products include crop protection, chemicals, plastics and performance products. The company is continuously looking for ways to conserve resources, ensure healthy food and nutrition and improve the overall quality of life. Earlier this year, BASF announced it had developed a new process for steering its portfolio based on sustainability criteria. The Sustainable Solution Steering method is used to systematically review and evaluate the sustainability aspects of the about 50,000 relevant product applications in the company’s portfolio, which represent sales of 56 billion euros ($72 billion).

The company says this externally validated process makes it possible to measure the products’ contribution to sustainability within their various markets and industries and to increase this contribution through targeted steps.
