P&G Beats Waste Goal Six Years Early

Procter & Gamble has achieved its waste reduction goal six years early and its pulp certification goal a year early, and has grown to 70 the number of global facilities delivering zero manufacturing waste to landfill, according to its latest sustainability report.

The company exceeded its waste reduction goal with only 0.4 percent of input materials being disposed of as manufacturing waste to landfill across all its facilities; the goal called for less than 0.5 percent by 2020.

Additionally, P&G had committed to obtaining Forest Stewardship Council certification for 40 percent of the virgin wood fibers used in its tissue towel by 2015; today, 54 percent are certified.

In October, P&G made new 2020 environmental commitments including:

• Further reduce water usage by an added 20 percent, with a specific focus on conservation efforts at plants in water-stressed regions.
• Provide 1 billion people access to water-efficient products.
• Double the use of recycled resin in plastic packaging.
• Ensure 90 percent of its product packaging is recyclable or that programs are in place to create the ability to recycle it.

P&G uses a 2010 baseline across all measurements.
