Using Data Analytics to Improve Water Management

Data analytics is an efficient, inexpensive way to improve water management strategies, Water Efficiency reports.

This is because usually sensors are already in place, and finding new efficiencies simply requires bringing together disparate data sources and looking at the integrated data from a new perspective.

Data analytics allows water managers to determine in nearly real-time when, how much and where water is being used. An abrupt change in water consumption — such as a sudden spike in usage — can be quickly investigated for possible leaks and repair teams can be sent out immediately, saving thousands or even millions of gallons of water.

Last week the US Geological Survey released a tool to help businesses better visualize water shortages — and develop water management strategies accordingly. The interactive California Drought visualization website that aims to provide atlas-like, statewide coverage of the drought and a timeline of its impacts on water resources
