Amyris Renewable Solvent Enters Industrial Cleaning Products Market

AmyrisAmyris plans to launch its first industrial cleaning products containing Amyris’ Myralene renewable solvents through US AutoForce and US Lubricants, divisions of US Venture.

The renewable solvent is produced from plant sugars. The Myralene solvent is derived from Amyris’ renewable hydrocarbon building block, farnesene. Myralene sustainably sourced, volatile organic compound (VOC)-exempt solvents provide a favorable viscosity profile, degreasing power, thermal and hydrolytic stability, low odor, no color, and ready biodegradability, the company says.

The planned partnership will give the renewable products company’s solvents line access to more than 35,000 automotive aftermarket and industrial outlets served by US Venture divisions.

Last year Amyris won a Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for engineering yeast to make a farnesane-based drop-in renewable fuel replacement for petroleum diesel. Making and burning this fuel could reduce 82 percent of greenhouse gas emissions as compared to petroleum diesel, saving tens of thousands of dollars each year, the EPA says.
