Several automakers are showcasing alternative fuel vehicles at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which kicked off on Monday. Here are some of our favorites.
Chevrolet unveiled the 2016 Volt electric car with extended range, showcasing a sleeker, sportier design that offers 50 miles of EV range, greater efficiency and stronger acceleration. The Volt’s new, efficient propulsion system will offer a General Motors’-estimated total driving range of more than 400 miles and with regular charging, owners are expected to travel more than 1,000 miles on average between gas fill-ups.
Chevy also introduced the Bolt EV concept — a vision for an affordable, long-range all-electric vehicle designed to offer more than 200 miles of range starting around $30,000.
The Volkswagen five-seater Cross Coupe GTE (pictured) made its debut in Detroit. This SUV uses a plug-in hybrid system with a maximum output of 355 horsepower and an all-wheel-drive system that uses an “electric driveshaft”. The hybrid has a manufacturer-estimated fuel economy rating of 70 MPGe.
Honda showcased its FCV concept with US availability of the production vehicle in 2016. The company also announced plans to offer several next-generation, advanced powertrain vehicles, including a new battery-electric model and plug-in hybrid model by 2018. Additionally, the company plans further application of its two- and three-motor hybrid systems in the years to come.
Ford unveiled the all-new GT, an ultra-high-performance supercar that serves as a technology showcase for top EcoBoost performance, aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fiber construction.
