Sainsbury’s Increases Sustainable Palm Oil Products

palm forestNinety-five percent of the palm oil used to make Sainsbury’s own-brand products is now certified sustainable, according to the company.

Sainsbury’s has almost 400 own-brand products that are made with segregated certified sustainable palm oil ranging from steak pie through to hand soap. With 396 own-brand products made with fully segregated certified sustainable palm oil this means the palm oil in these products comes from a certified source through a guaranteed segregated supply chain. Overall more than 1,100 own-brand products use certified sustainable palm oil – either through segregated or mass balance supply chains.

The company has been a member of the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil since 2006.

Late last year Ikea committed to using only sustainably sourced palm oil and Unilever pledged 100 percent of palm oil sourced for its European foods business would be traceable and certified sustainable by the end of 2014.
