University of California’s New Retail Energy Supplier: Itself

The University of California (UC) has become a licensed electric service provider and now plans to switch from a third-party supplier to purchasing power from its own Wholesale Power Program. This program will serve several university and medical campuses throughout the state. According to a press release from UC, administrators believe they can achieve a 10 percent reduction in system-wide power bills in 2015.

The UC Energy & Facilities Management website states that the system currently spends $122 million on electricity annually, including $18 million of competitive power. In September 2014, UC also signed a 25-year agreement to purchase over 200,000 MWh per year of solar energy from Frontier Renewables.
