Arizona Governor Doug Ducey announced that Apple will be expanding in Arizona with a $2 billion investment in a factory it already owns in Mesa. Apple will turn its 1.3 million-sq-foot building into a data center, which it refers to as “a command center” for its global networks.

Additionally, Apple is making a significant investment to power the facility with 100 percent renewable energy – building and financing solar projects that will produce 70 MW.

Apple will develop the new solar plants with local utility Salt River Project, according to Gigaom.

Apple’s 2014 Environmental Responsibility Report, covering fiscal year 2013, said the company’s goal is to power all Apple corporate offices, retail stores, and data centers entirely with energy from renewable sources – solar, wind, micro-hydro, and geothermal.
