R2 logoThe transition period for upgrading to the new R2:2013 electronics recycling standard ended Dec. 31, 2014. This means R2:2008 certificates are no longer recognized and the R2 “Leaf” logo no longer indicates that a facility is R2 certified.

Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), the governing body of the R2 standard, says the vast majority of companies that were certified to the R2:2008 standard elected to implement the more rigorous requirements of the revised standard and have successfully made the transition.

Key differences between R2:2013 and the original R2:2008 standard include tighter requirements verifying the legality of exports; increased accountability and due diligence throughout the recycling chain for Focus Materials (materials that require greater care in managing due to their potential risk to human health or the environment); stronger requirements for data security; strict testing and labeling requirements for electronic devices and parts destined for reuse; and the requirement to be certified to an approved environmental health and safety management system.
