Electric Propulsion Thruster Requires 25% Less Installed Power

Environmental Leader Azipod+A7H5372Switzerland-based ABB has introduced Azipod D to its Azipod electric propulsion line. The Azipod D requires up to 25 percent less installed power, in part because it incorporates hybrid cooling, which increases the performance of the electric motor by up to 45 percent.

Azipod D’s propulsion power ranges from 1.6 MW to 7 MW per unit. It accommodates a wide range of hull shapes and propeller sizes, expanding the range of vessel types that can use Azipod propulsion systems to offshore drilling, construction and support vessels and ferries. Azipod propulsion is particularly appealing to the offshore shipping segments where varying power demand, high propulsion efficiency and flexibility are typical requirements.

According to the company, Azipod units help to lower maintenance costs, cut fuel consumption and increase performance compared to mechanical thrusters.
