Microsoft, SERI, PCRR Spearhead R2 Ready for Reuse Pilot

SERI, Microsoft and PC Rebuilders & Recyclers are leading a pilot project that will create incentives for purchasing refurbished computers, according to SERI.

The R2 Ready for Reuse Project will host the refurbishment and testing reports for R2 refurbished computers in an online database. A purchaser of a refurbished computer will be able to look up the unit’s report using an attached label. The intent is to provide buyers of refurbished computers with an extra level of transparency and assurance that their purchase will meet their expectations for high quality.

SERI says labels have been shipped for testing with the database, and the online database is in the final stages of testing.  Revisions to the database will be implemented in the upcoming months as the pilot progresses.

When completed, PCRR will move forward with additional testing of the labeling system with selected customers and partners.

Companies, organizations and other stakeholders that join the R2 program pledge to manage their electronics responsibly, consider R2 Certification as part of their criteria for choosing a recycler, and demonstrate leadership in the field of electronics recycling through the projects and policies.
