American Water Lands Wastewater Treatment Research Grant

American Water, a New Jersey-based publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, has been awarded a research grant from The WateReuse Research Foundation to study human pathogens removal through a variety of wastewater treatment processes.

The two-year study, which will cost $590,546 with funding from the WateReuse Research Foundation and American Water, is being conducted in collaboration with MWH Global and Corona Environmental Consultants Inc. The research project team will consist of Zia Bukhari, a senior environmental scientist with American Water, as the principal investigator. American Water’s Mark LeChevallier, Joan Oppenheimer of MWH Global and Tim Bartrand of Corona Environmental Consultants will be co-principal investigators.

Reusing potable water sources to augment freshwater supplies has gained acceptance as technology has improved and scarcity issues have increased. However, the variety of different wastewater treatment processes needs to be characterized to ensure appropriate downstream treatment is employed to meet future regulations and to protect public health, Bukhari says.

In May, American Water agreed to acquire all of the issued and outstanding capital stock of the Environmental Disposal Corporation. EDC provides wastewater service to the more than 5,300 customer accounts, which are located in EDC’s service territory in Bedminster and Bernards townships, New Jersey. In addition, EDC provides retail wastewater treatment to the Boroughs of Far Hills, Peapack, Gladstone and portions of Bedminster, outside EDC’s service territory, on the basis of long-term contracts.
