Hybrid Drive System Improves Refuse Fleet Fuel Economy up to 50%

Run WiseParker Hannifin, which manufactures motion and control technologies and systems, has received approval from the California Air Resources Board to sell the RunWise Advanced Series Hybrid Drive System under a dual-name executive order including the Parker Hannifin RunWise system, paired with the Cummins 2015 model-year engine. These certified hybrid vehicles can help improve fuel economy and efficiency in California refuse fleets by up to 50 percent, the company says.

The RunWise hydraulic hybrid system replaces a conventional transmission and delivers increased productivity by accumulating energy from the vehicle’s braking system. On average, a RunWise-equipped truck captures more than 71 percent of a vehicle’s otherwise lost braking energy and uses it to accelerate the vehicle, which can save up to 4,300 gallons of fuel a year per truck.

With more than 2 million miles of operation, RunWise is the only fully integrated advanced series hydraulic hybrid drive system for commercial trucks on the market today benefitting more than 30 cities across the US, the company says.
